Kurt Vonnegut on writing

This blogger sums up Kurt Vonnegut’s tips on how to write with style as:

  1. Find a subject you care about
  2. Do not ramble, though
  3. Keep it simple
  4. Have guts to cut
  5. Sound like yourself
  6. Say what you mean
  7. Pity the readers

I was about to say, “I’m not a writer (not beyond my ramblings here, anyway).” But that’s not true. I’m not a poet, I don’t write works of fiction, I’ve never written an article for a magazine or a newspaper, but I am a writer. I write guidelines, reports, and other thoroughly unexciting business documents. And, I am published (academic work). Vonnegut’s tips may not relate to business documents, but it’s still writing and it still takes skill.

But, I digress. He’s right and the list is pretty much the same as what you’ll read in any “how to” article … it’s just shorter and to the point.

That many? … Yeah, I guess she does.
